Patterned Imprinted Concrete

Patterned Imprinted Concrete (PIC) is an innovative skilled technique. This technique adds patterns and colours to concrete freshly poured on patios, driveways, and paths. This recreates the look of real materials like stone and slate as well as timber. This process eliminates the high price of natural products.

Minimal Maintenance

Patterned concrete is a unique product that needs minimal maintenance. It performs far better than alternative products such as block pavers, flagstones, tarmac or flagstones. There are many issues that can be fixed by having a dolomite foundation and four inches of fibre reinforced cement. These problems can be attributed to other products, such as sinking and weeds. The problems that can be encountered with wooden decked patios include block paving and wood rot.

What is Pattern Imprinted Concrete?

Simply put, pattern concrete (also known by stamped concrete) involves pouring concrete over a subbase, then applying a colour followed by a hardener. This is very different from traditional concreting where blocks were used to create your finish.

After the concrete has cured, the pattern can be applied. There are many prints you can choose from. The most common include brickwork, textured stones, and ashlar. For driveway lining, patterned concrete is a popular option for domestic properties.

Good quality print

The quality of the printed cement is what you should be focusing on. Concrete needs to be laid correctly, which requires extreme care, dedication, patience, and perseverance. The concrete may become incoherent and result in a concrete floor that is not structurally sound.

A contractor will typically use six to eight rigid matsa and one flexible mat per set. The driveway’s narrowest section will require six mats. However, the flexible mats can be used to print and access areas that the rigid mats won’t.

Although most printing mats measure 600x600mm in size, it is possible to order matts up to 600x600mm.

Colour Consistency

To ensure that your flooring is the right colour, you need to be aware of how imprinted concrete will look. Colour surface hardener is the main component of patterned concrete. Antique release agents are also important.

The final result will be poor if the colour top coater is not applied correctly or it isn’t sufficient. This is especially evident in commercial jobs larger than retail shop flooring.

It may take several concrete deliveries for big commercial jobs. This could result in slight colour variations in each concrete mix. The job of the surface hardener, when applied, is to match the colours. This is especially useful for larger jobs that may take several days.

Ensuring Long-Term Durability

To ensure that the concrete floor is durable, the sub-stone foundation must be mixed with the ground below it. This could be soil or stone.

Additionally, the concrete mix used plays a significant role in ensuring the structural integrity is maintained for years to follow.

This is especially important when you live in areas with high traffic, such as driveways and multi-storey car parkings.

Reduce the Chance of the Concrete Cracking

When applying for patterned concrete driveways, ensure that you have at least 300kgs cement per cubic meter.

In colder climates, you may need more.

An air entertaining additive can also be added to enhance the floor’s durability and resistance from cracking caused by heavy traffic and weather.

Reducing Maintenance & Maximising Results

You can enhance the overall appearance of patterned cement by applying an acrylic sealant that is solvent-based (only once dry). Water-based acrylics will cause more problems, so be careful with these for patterned concrete.

You can also apply the sealant once every four years to maintain the appearance and quality of your patterned concrete.

Although this is not a requirement, it will preserve your driveway (or other patterned concrete) for many more years.
